Storm coming to Southern California
8/18/2023 (Permalink)
Hurricane Hilary is headed to Southern California, and this is what you need to know and expect. The locations that will be affected are Victorville, Hesperia, and Apple Valley. Expect extreme wind with a wind forecast of 35-45 mph with gusts to 60mph. The window for tropical storm force winds is from Sunday to early Monday morning. Expect 3-6 inches of extreme rainfall. Flood waters can enter numerous structures within multiple
communities, some structures becoming uninhabitable or washed away. Numerous places where flood waters may cover escape routes. Streets and parking lots may become rivers of
raging water with underpasses submerged. Driving conditions may become very dangerous. Numerous road and bridge closures
with some weakened or washed out. Seek shelter if you're located in the area the hurricane is hitting and remember SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights is here to help.
4 types of storms
8/11/2022 (Permalink)
There are four major kinds of storms. Theirs thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter storms. A hurricane draws its energy from the warm humid air at the ocean's surface. Inside the storm are bands of very high winds and rains, the result is a storm surge. If this happens you should be prepared to evacuate or move away temporarily. Thunderstorms are dangerous because they cause severe damage and lightning. When lightning strikes people or animals it acts as a powerful electric shock. To be safe avoid large bodies of water and objects that conduct electricity. Tornadoes are something were all familiar with and to stay safe during a tornado is to find a tornado shelter or the basement of a well-build building. Lastly winter storms can cause heavy snowfall so find shelter from the wind.
Thunderstorms
8/11/2022 (Permalink)
Thunderstorms are the most dangerous weather event in the US. All thunderstorms produce lightning, which is one of the top three causes of weather-related deaths in the US. In fact, lightning kills approximately 50 people every year. Thunderstorms can also produce hail floods and tornadoes. In some cases, hail can be the size of baseballs and travel at speeds of 100 mph. Even if a thunderstorm doesn’t create a tornado, it can still produce wind gusts at speeds of over 58 mph. Strong winds can easily knock down trees and tree branches. Consider removing trees or branches that could fall in strong winds and damage your property. Roofs made of ceramic, slate or shakes can easily be ruined in a hail barrage. If your house or business is in an area that experiences hailstorms, consider using stainless steel or asphalt shingles.
Rainy season
11/4/2021 (Permalink)
In Southern California we don't get many storms, if at all much rainfall unfortunately. When we do many people aren't ready for it because they don't exactly expect it. SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights knows this, and we try to remind everyone to take care of any broken tiles on their roofs before any rain starts to fall, or wind starts to blow broken roof tiles away. There's nothing worse than to sit at home knowing you could have done something about this before it got worse but made no action. The amount of water that can make its way into your home can be disastrous, and it can not only affect your home but get to the contents in your home.
Storms may be on the way
11/1/2021 (Permalink)
As Southern California starts to cool down after another very hot summer, we start to see signs of rain and snow. For a lot of us its a relief from the hot weather that causes many wildlife fires which also affect our homes and businesses. For a lot of us that may live in the mountains, or higher elevation. Now we must worry about water, and snow possibly entering our homes or place of business. Being prepared, checking your roof tiles, having sand bags ready, all very important steps to take to prevent any water intrusion from storms. With the wind picking up, roof tiles are one of the biggest issues people here in Southern California have. With the wind being strong, it can lift your roof tiles and blow them away, or the wind can pick up your roof tiles from underneath and as it comes down it can crack and cause water to come into your home from above.
When the weather starts cooling down
10/14/2021 (Permalink)
Summer is finally coming to an end, and with that not only comes cooler weather, but also problematic weather. The summer in Southern California is a bit crazy. What I mean by that is that it gets really hot, and with that hot weather comes fires. So many fires that it threatens our ecosystem and our wildlife. A new threat comes into play during the fall and winter times. Storms are a big part in natural disasters that affect us humans and the way we live and operate business. Our homes and office buildings flood, get affected by wind, and in some places tornadoes. Luckily in Southern California we don't have to worry about tornadoes, but we do get some strong winds and rains from time to time. So if you find yourself in a position where you need SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights for our storm services, don't hesitate because the longer you wait, the worse it can be.

Storms in Southern California
7/28/2021 (Permalink)
Usually Southern California does not have many storms throughout the year. When we do get them, it can get pretty bad and being storm ready is very important. The best thing you can do is have sand bags in front of any entrances or exits around your home or business to prevent water from entering. If the water does not find its way into your home through front doors for example, it can find its way through your roof if its damaged. For that instance we would suggest you keep your eye on your roof tiles and make sure they are in good condition and can handle the amount of rain that will be coming down. Basically it comes down to preparation so you can be ready for any sized disaster.

Tropical storm Eta
11/3/2020 (Permalink)
Tropical storm Eta formed overnight, strengthened throughout Sunday and is now moving toward Nicaragua according to the latest forecast Sunday evening. The storm center is about 200 miles east of the Nicaraguan coast. It is generating sustained winds of up to 70 mph, forecasters said, and is moving west at 13 mph. Tropical storm Eta will continue to strengthen over the next 36 hours and will likely reach hurricane strength Sunday night. Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of Honduras and Nicaragua. Eta is the 28th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season meaning that 2020 has tied 2005 for the most named storms in a single hurricane season. Scientists have long warned that increasing ocean temperatures and other effects of climate change have caused the rise of dangerous storms.
Tropical storm Epsilon
10/21/2020 (Permalink)
Tropical Storm Epsilon strengthened quickly from a tropical disturbance through a tropical depression and into a tropical storm overnight Oct. 18-19. As of the morning of October 20th, 2020, Epsilon was relatively stationary and expected to remain approximately 710 mi (1145 km) southeast of Bermuda. It is expected to begin a slow drift northwest that will continue through the rest of the week. While it is too early to identify a definitive track, Epsilon is likely to pass close to or make landfall on the island of Bermuda later this week. Tropical storms can be very damaging to homes and businesses all over the world and should be closely monitored to keep people and their homes and businesses safe. We don't have much storms here in Upland, CA but we have traveled to New York for Hurricane sandy to help out with all the water remediation there.
Hurricane Delta Forecast
10/7/2020 (Permalink)
Hurricane Delta made landfall last night near Cancun, Mexico. All data from buoys and weather observation stations indicate intensity was at category 2 at landfall. Delta is emerging into the Gulf of Mexico and will be moving in the shadows of Tropical Storm Gamma. All that means is that Gamma has already mixed up the waters in the southern Gulf of Mexico which acts to cool the water. Delta will escape the shadows of Gamma by tomorrow and enter into the central Gulf. Sea surface temperatures are still very warm in the central Gulf so expect rapid intensification Thursday and Friday. Delta will be at it’s prime while in the central Gulf but will diminish in intensity before making landfall due to wind shear over the south central U.S. and cool waters just off the coast of Louisiana.
Tropical storm Gamma
10/7/2020 (Permalink)
Tropical Storm Gamma has winds of 50 mph this morning and is moving north at 5 mph. The storm is located over the southern Gulf of Mexico and is about 30 Miles north of Rio Lagartos, Mexico. Torrential rain is occurring with Gamma this morning over the northern Yucatan Peninsula with over 9 inches of rain reported in Cozumel, Mexico. Gamma will then meander around in the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico for the next few days but, while there could be a brief period of strengthening today, Gamma will weaken again beginning Monday and lasting into Wednesday. Locally, over 12 inches of rain will be possible in the coming days due to Gamma’s slow movement. The area at greatest risk for major flash flooding will be in the Mexican States of Campeche, Tabasco, Chiapas and Veracruz, and these heavy rainfall totals could cause mudslides.

Storm damage in Upland, CA.

Storm damages come with major destruction at times to homes. In other cases a storm may happen when you're away from home, and when you come back, you come back to something like the photo provided. What you see is mold due to a water intrusion by a storm, the home owners were away on a business trip when a storm hit their city and caused structural damage inside the home. Mold grew because they came back two weeks after the storm hit, which means water water was sitting in their walls for two weeks. Mold can grow within 24 hours if enough water lingered inside the wall cavity, which it has in this case. Luckily the damages weren't too big and SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights came in and made it "Like it never even happened."
Storm damage in Alta Loma, Ca

Flooring and walls affected by water
Storms can be disastrous, and some storms can cause minor to no damages to your home or business. In this case a storm caused a water intrusion in a home in Alta Loma, CA. The water intrusion affected hardwood flooring, and drywall damages throughout the home. As you can see in the photo provided, the wooden floors started to buckle which means water has been trapped underneath the flooring for quite some time. Also you can clearly see how high the water went on the drywall inside the home. In this case we remove the hardwood flooring and dry down the water underneath, clean and sanitize the area and also remove the wet drywall and insulation on the walls to prevent any mold growth. By the end of this loss, the customer was pleased to see that we restored his home and truly made it "Like it never even happened."

Storm damage goes beyond water.
Storm damage can be caused by many different damages to your home or business. A mop and common household cleaning products may not be enough for black water intrusions. Your local SERVPRO franchise professional is trained to safely clean and restore your home, utilizing the following procedures.
1. Identify the source/type of water
2. Measure temperature and humidity for drying analysis
3. Survey the extent of damage and inspect the premises

Storm Damage response tips for property owners

Dehumidifier and air movers drying wet drywall and ceiling not affected by mold.
Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. The two primary components of a proper water restoration are: 1 Fast action; and 2 thorough drying. Intrusions of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat. You can always trust SERVPRO of Upland/San Antonio Heights to manage all of your water damage needs.

Avoiding Disaster Fraud
After a disaster, community-based organizations and agencies often band together to try to meet the needs of affected individuals and communities. Unfortunately, this often brings criminals who prey on the needs of disaster survivors by offering fraudulent services.
Learn how to protect yourself and your finances from additional loss. FEMA offers reminders to help you avoid disaster fraud, including:
- There is never a fee to apply for FEMA disaster assistance or to receive it;
- Get three written estimates for repair work. Then check credentials and contact your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce to learn about any complaints against the contractor or business;
- Before work begins, make sure you get a written contract detailing all the work to be performed, the costs, a projected completion date, and how to negotiate changes and settle disputes; and
- Pay only by check or a credit card. A reasonable down payment may be required to buy materials for some projects, but don't pay anything without a signed contract.

Regular Carpet Cleaning Can Extend the Life of Your Carpet
SERVPRO Can Get the Deep Dirt Out of Your Carpet
Carpet cleaning is like the unexpected storm that damages your home or business. It is suggested by carpeting manufacturers that carpets should be professionally cleaned every 12 months. During the interim, carpets should be cared for with regular maintenance solutions. These steps involve using walk-off mats to lessen the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet; regular vacuuming; removing spots, pilating (or grooming) the carpet to prevent matting and moving furniture to change traffic patterns. As beautiful and aesthetic as carpeting is, it is a natural dirt and soil filter trap. It traps and holds dust, crumbs, dirt, gasses, pet hair, and other soil contaminants.
Our carpet cleaning service is designed to keep your indoor air a healthy breathing environment. When you look at your carpeting, you may only see the dirt trapped on the top fibers. The truth is that more dirt, bacteria, and germs are hiding below the surface. The hidden contaminants are causing damage to the life of your carpeting. We offer specialized cleaning methods based on your carpeting material. We provide a premier cleaning system, which also involves bonnet cleaning, hot water extraction, deluxe preconditioning and rinse, as well as a quality dry cleaning.
Let us take the drudgery of carpet cleaning out of your hands. Place this necessary chore into the hands of your local professionals. We offer regular carpet cleaning services that will keep your carpet looking new. Protect your flooring investment by having SERVPRO clean and maintain your carpets.
